Mother, can you look underneath my bed? I know you checked it last night but I hear those sounds again. Please don’t tell me that’s it all in my head. I just want these nightmares to end. Son, never let the world see you cry. They’ll drink that weakness up and spit it back in your eye. You mustn’t let them know that you are not okay. They’ll never let it go. They’ll make that fear your name. Father, can you seal that closet up? I don’t trust what grows in the absence of the sun. The goosebumps on my arm were evidence enough but the ectoplasm stain was the smoking gun. Son, never let world hear you scream. Every word you speak from then will be branded cowardly. Even if that monster turns out to be real it’s better to let him get you than for you to reveal you’re afraid. Never let em tell you that you shouldn’t feel that way. The world may try to hide it but we’re not as strong as we portray. No one knows where we’re going or what’s on the other side, and that uncertainty is scary and it’s with us all the time. It dwells inside our closets and crawls beneath our beds. It stalks us like a killer and constrains us like a web. And the ones that feign as fearless are the ones that fear the most, cuz if you don’t know what scares you then you’re just another ghost. So when you look under your bed, there’s no need to be ashamed. The monsters that come out at night, even they cower in the day. And when your body trembles your mind can still be brave. You don’t have to explain my child, we all feel the same. We’re all afraid.
